The Economics Department (ECON) is responsible for providing thought leadership within AIIB and helping ensure the economic sustainability and development impact of projects financed by AIIB. The department is organized around a few key pillars: (a) macroeconomics and finance; (b) project economics; (c) research and development impact; (d) ecosystem and social development.

The Associate will support project teams in undertaking economic analysis of AIIB-financed projects, including cost-benefit analysis, assessment of project alternatives, development impact analysis, and review of key economic assumptions and risks. The Associate will also coordinate within ECON and across other departments to provide timely comments and analytical inputs to support Screening Committee (SC), Interdepartmental Review (IDR), Investment Committee (IC), and other project review processes, with the objective of strengthening project quality and economic justification.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct economic analysis of investment projects, independently or as part of a team, including cost-benefit analysis, economic rate of return analysis, assessment of project alternatives, and analysis of key economic risks and assumptions.
• Support project teams during project preparation and appraisal, including reviewing economic justification, development impact, demand and benefit estimates, and other aspects relevant to project quality.
• Undertake sector, country, and thematic analysis relevant to AIIB’s investment operations and project pipeline.
• Coordinate across ECON and other departments to provide timely comments, data and analytical inputs for SC, IDR, IC, and other project review processes.
• Contribute to the development and improvement of tools, methodologies, data and guidance for project economic analysis, including cost-benefit analysis and related approaches.
• Support research and data development activities and contribute to the department’s flagship publications and other analytical outputs.

Requirements:

• At least three to five years of relevant professional experience.
• Master’s degree or equivalent in development economics, public policy, finance or a related field from an internationally recognized institution.
• Experience in project economic analysis, cost-benefit analysis, infrastructure appraisal, or development project evaluation is highly preferred.
• Familiarity with infrastructure sectors and/or experience working with multilateral development banks, development finance institutions, governments, or similar organizations would be an advantage.
• Solid analytical and quantitative skills, including the ability to work with project, sector, and economic data.
• Experience with statistical or econometric software, data analysis and data visualization is desirable.
• Knowledge of climate change, environmental sustainability, resilience, and nature-related issues, and their relevance to infrastructure investment and economic analysis, is desirable.
• Ability to critically assess project assumptions, alternatives, costs, benefits, risks, and development impacts and translate analysis into practical recommendations for project teams.
• Good organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple assignments and deliver high-quality work within tight timelines.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
